Bones of the Martyrs, Saints and Believers housed in the Great Meteoran or Transfiguration of Christ Monastery

The holy monastery of Megalo Meteoro or Trasfiguration of Christ was founded in the middle of 14th century by the holy Athanasio the Meteorite (first founder and organizer of the Monastery’s commune ) on the biggest rock , the so called flat rock.

His successor and second founder was the holy monk called Ioasaf, ex king’s Uresis Ioannis son of the Serb-Greek ‘king’ called Simeon Uresi who had his seat in Trikala.

In the Holy Katholiko of the monastery there are very important frescos of the Macedonian painting school as well as in the central part of the monastery’s church and Narthika , the frescos suppose to be made by Georgis , a painting pupil of the great Theofanis the cretan.

In the above Holy Monastery they are many chapel like: Meteoritic Mother of God called Petra – the Saint John the Baptist – the equally Holy Isapostles Konstandine and Elenis and the Holy Nektaros chapel the most recent.

The most important sections in the Monastery are: the kitchen , the old people’s home, the museum – etc.

In the Holy Monastery of Grand Meteoro there is a remarkable and important collection of manuscripts , icons and Holy relics.
